People stay where the work makes sense, and where the community around them can support them. Retention is not just an HR problem. It is a systems problem and a community infrastructure problem at the same time.
That is why I work on both. The systems inside organizations, where unclear handoffs and tribal knowledge cost real people. And the visibility and coordination outside organizations, where the supports that decide whether someone can show up tomorrow live across hundreds of nonprofits, agencies, schools, and civic groups.
When the system inside the work is broken, people leave. When the community outside the work is invisible, staying can get harder. Both sides matter if the work is going to hold.
